How to check if an image was made with ChatGPT / DALL·E
- OpenAI adds C2PA Content Credentials to images generated in ChatGPT and its API. The manifest records that the image came from an OpenAI model.
- We read that manifest directly from the file and name OpenAI as the source when it is present.
- OpenAI has also adopted SynthID compatibility, so Google's free SynthID tool is a useful second check.
Visual signs of ChatGPT / DALL·E content
Look for warm, evenly lit "illustration" styling, very clean typography in posters and a soft, airbrushed finish on faces.
Visual clues are never conclusive on their own. Combine them with a metadata check and a reverse image search. See our full guide: how to tell if an image is AI-generated.
ChatGPT / DALL·E detector FAQ
How do I know if a picture was made by ChatGPT?
Upload the original file. If it carries OpenAI Content Credentials, the result names OpenAI as the generator.
Why does my ChatGPT image show no signature?
Credentials are lost when an image is screenshotted, cropped in some apps, or re-uploaded to social media.
