How to check if an image was made with Midjourney
- Midjourney publicly committed (May 2023) to labelling its images with the IPTC "Digital Source Type" field set to trainedAlgorithmicMedia, the industry tag for AI-generated media.
- Original downloads may also carry Midjourney-related text in their XMP or EXIF fields, which we match by name.
- Midjourney images are not covered by Google's SynthID Detector, so a metadata check is one of the few automated ways to verify them.
Visual signs of Midjourney content
Ultra-polished lighting, painterly skin, perfect symmetry and a recognisable "cinematic" colour grade are common visual tells.
Visual clues are never conclusive on their own. Combine them with a metadata check and a reverse image search. See our full guide: how to tell if an image is AI-generated.
Midjourney detector FAQ
Can I tell if an image is from Midjourney?
Yes, if the original file still has its metadata. Our tool looks for the IPTC AI tag and Midjourney name in the file. Screenshots and social media re-uploads usually remove it.
Does SynthID detect Midjourney?
No. Google's SynthID Detector only finds its own watermark and partners that adopted it. Midjourney is not one of them.
